Biography

Jacob van Lear was a Virginia colonist.

Farmer. Father of Jacob van Lear Jr (1745-1821), John van Lear, Gertrude "Garty" (Robinson) van Lear, Isabella (Abney) van Lear.

29th July, 1783. Jacob Van Lear's will--To wife, Margaret; to son, Jacob, all lands; to son, John, £15; to daughter, Gartry Robinson, 50 shillings; to daughter, Isabel Abney, 50 shillings. Executors, Jacob Van Lear and John Christian. Teste: Patrick and John Christian. Proved, 18th November, 1783, by the witnesses. Jacob qualifies.^[1]

“The Van Lears were among the good old people living near Cross Keys. The progenitor of this family seems to have been Jacob Van Lear, who settled near Tinkling Springs prior to the Revolution and was a soldier in that war."^[2] Note: this reference contains information about later generations of van Lears.

This Jacob van Lear is presumably the grandfather of Jacob van Lear (b Jan 9, 1773, d Feb 28, 1845), who would then be the son of either Jacob or John, the sons mentioned above.
